A Different Cemetery

Connan didn't react, simply stared her down.

"Half a mile east of here, there are one hundred and thirty seven graves that say otherwise."

she looked puzzled "graves?, what did they do?" she asked

"They are my family. Not ancestors; people I considered close enough to call my brothers and sisters. I wasn't there to defend them, and something slaughtered them. Good looks count for nothing when they cover a man already dead."

Jessica said no more her heart felt for him she had no family all turned her away or had died.

"But that aside, sometimes it is necessary to wear a mask. Do it if you must; after all, it won't kill you."

Jessica stood up pulling the hood of her cloak over her head

Kain turned and started to walk out.

Jessica looked at the man "you wear a mask but don't know it" she said to him.

"I wear no such thing."

Jessica moved to follow him "yes you do you just don't see it" she said her hood still over her shoulders.

He smirked and walked out.
He disipated into mist and was seemingly gone.

Connan muttered "We all wear masks; we have to."

she turned to look at the man who remained "some use theirs to hate other to love, others as i do to hide away" she said

"Some use them because it's better than seeing the person who's meant to stare back from the mirror."

His voice was quiet, reflective.

"Maybe some use it for all of those purposes."

"which is how you see yourself" she said moving to stand in front of him

"For all? With out a doubt. We do what we must,"

Then eyes locking onto hers, he whispered, intense and...afraid? "But the question is, why?"

she looked into his speaking softly in return "we do what we must to survive, it is our nature, human nature" she said

Connan looked away.

"Human nature. Isn't that all we are; our natures, what we're born to be. So fucking fragile."

Jessica reached out her hand to his cheek " I was not born like this i was normal once a girl who waited for love to find her , then i was taken and the love was ripped from me, i became what you see not a human and not a vampire ether, waiting for the day love will enter my heart again" sighing she moved away "I still wait".

"Don't wait on it. It happens when it happens and breaks you when it's gone."

Jessica shook her head with a soft smile "that part i am painfully aware of" she said

"Then why do you bother waiting?"

she looked at him "because its not worth anything if taken"she said "To feel whole my heart needs love and i long to be whole again" she moved away from him

"Whole?" He said the word like he didn't know what it meant any more. "If it's taken, surely it's worth more; it gains the need to fight to have it back again."

Jessica looked at him as she spoke "i fight , i fight the hunger every day , I fight the need to drink the blood of an innocent" she said anger now in her voice.
